A community group in Northwest Arkansas is seeking public support to transform the former West Fork Quarry into a dedicated retreat for veterans and first responders. To realize this vision, the organization is working to raise over $10 million to purchase the depleted limestone quarry, which encompasses more than 1,000 acres of land.
Keith Soper, a Vietnam veteran leading the effort, believes the property offers a unique opportunity for healing and connection. Soper envisions a centralized hub where multiple support organizations can operate in one location, allowing veterans to access various services efficiently. By incorporating nature-based activities such as fishing and hiking, the retreat aims to help veterans rediscover the sense of camaraderie and brotherhood often lost after their time in service.
The acquisition would also provide critical space for organizations like Paws Forward. Casey Patterson, who works with the organization, explained that the expansive land would be used to train service dogs to help veterans manage PTSD and other medical challenges through pressure therapy and scent work. Patterson emphasized that such a facility would provide a safe environment for veterans to overcome self-isolation, rediscover their purpose, and spend meaningful time with their families.
The group is calling on the local community to help fund the land purchase to get the project underway. Those interested in contributing or learning more about the initiative can contact Keith Soper via Facebook or by emailing OurLostBattalion2025@gmail.com.
