Red Hot Chili Peppers Sell Music Rights for Over $300 Million

The legendary funk and alternative rock band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, has made another significant business move. In 2021, the band sold the rights to their songs to a company called Hipgnosis for approximately $140 million. Now, they have sold their collection of recorded music to Warner Music Group for an even larger amount, more than twice their previous deal.

According to The Hollywood Reporter on May 8th, the Red Hot Chili Peppers sold the rights to their recorded songs and albums to Warner Music Group for over $300 million. This deal was made through a special partnership Warner Music Group has with an investment company called Bain Capital. This partnership was first announced in July 2023 and is a large fund of $1.2 billion meant for acquiring music catalogs. The $300 million paid for the Red Hot Chili Peppers' catalog is part of the $650 million Warner Music Group has spent on catalogs so far, as mentioned in their May 7th earnings report. The company has not yet revealed which other catalogs they've purchased.

Rumors about the Red Hot Chili Peppers looking to sell their recorded music rights began circulating as early as February of this year. There are also reports that Sony Music Group might buy Hipgnosis, the company that owns the band's songwriting rights, in a multi-billion dollar deal. This means the Red Hot Chili Peppers' publishing rights could also change hands soon.

Billboard magazine added that the band reportedly owns their 13 studio albums and other releases put out by Warner Music Group in the U.S., from their 1991 album Blood Sugar Sex Magik to their 2022 albums Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen. However, it's unclear if the band also owned their first four studio albums, originally released by EMI, which are also part of this new sale. The deal's terms regarding the band's name, image, and likeness rights are also not yet known.

Estimates from Billboard last year suggested that the Red Hot Chili Peppers' master recordings generate about $26 million in revenue annually. A large portion of this income comes from the recordings managed by Warner Music Group, including hit albums like Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californication.
